Preparing Your Load

Sort Your Metal Before You Visit

This section is about preparation. What you do before you leave home usually has more effect on your payout than anything that happens at the yard.

The rule is simple. A mixed pile has to be graded as its lowest common material, because that is the only way it can be assessed fairly. A sorted pile is graded metal by metal. On a decent load, that difference is real money.

Worth separating, every time:

What costs you money:

You do not need to strip anything back to bare metal, and you should never use an unsafe method to do it. Remove what comes off easily and safely, and leave the rest to us.

  • Copper away from brass. They look similar in a pile and they are priced very differently.

  • Bare copper away from PVC copper cable. Cable is priced on copper recovery, not on total weight.

  • Stainless steel away from mild steel. A magnet tells you which is which in two seconds.

  • Batteries away from everything else. They are checked separately and they are a safety item.

  • Aluminium extrusion and mag wheels away from dirty or irony aluminium.

  • Timber, plastic, rubbish and concrete left attached.

  • Oil, coolant or fuel still in the material.

  • Burnt cable. Burning damages the copper, downgrades the load, and it is unsafe.

  • Steel bolts, brackets and clips left on non-ferrous metal.

How Pricing Works

Check Prices Before Drop-off

This section is about money. Scrap metal is a traded commodity, so the rate you get today is not the rate you would have got last month.

Prices are published by branch and reviewed weekly. Auckland and Christchurch rates can differ because local operating costs, freight and demand are not the same in both cities. Always check the price page for the branch you actually plan to visit.

What moves the published rate:

What decides your final number:

Published rates are indicative. Scrap metal prices are subject to international market fluctuations and may change without notice. The final price is confirmed at the time of delivery, based on scrap metal type, weight and cleanliness, and all materials are subject to grading on arrival.

  • International metal markets and the New Zealand dollar.

  • Freight and shipping cost to export markets.

  • Local demand, and how much of that grade is already in the yard.

  • The grade your material is assessed at on arrival.

  • The confirmed weight on our certified scales.

  • Cleanliness, contamination and attachments.

Safety And Compliance

Keep Unsafe Items Out Of The Yard

This section is about safety, not value. Some material cannot come through the gate at any price, because of the risk it carries to our staff, our customers and the recycling stream.

Alkaline Batteries - Household batteries have no recoverable lead value and they contaminate a lead-acid load. Use a council collection point.

Asbestos - Common in older cladding, lagging, roofing and gaskets. It must go to a licensed asbestos handler. Never try to remove it yourself to get at the metal underneath.

Biological Waste - Any organic or contaminated waste is a health risk in a metal yard and cannot be sorted safely.

Flammable Liquids - Petrol, solvents and thinners in a yard full of cutting and grinding is a fire risk.

Gas Bottles - LPG, CO2 and industrial cylinders can explode under a grab or a shear, even when they read empty. This is the item behind most serious scrap yard incidents worldwide.

Lithium Batteries - Lithium cells ignite when they are crushed or punctured, and a lithium fire in a metal pile is very hard to put out. Never accepted, in any quantity.

Oil - Engine oil, hydraulic fluid and coolant contaminate everything around them and create a discharge problem. Drain it before you arrive.

Scrap Mart also does not offer solar panel recycling, and does not target car bodies, car engines or machinery.

If you are not sure, ask first. Send a photo through the quote form before you load anything up. It takes a minute and it saves a wasted trip.
